Brass Goggles and Steam Punk
When it comes to Brass Goggles what is the first thing that you think of? For many people it is the idea of Steam Punk. Steam Punk is a fictional genre that is based around the rise of technology in Victorian times when it was believed that steam technology would be able to do anything.
Whilst these days we may be more used to electronics and computers, many look back onto this era of steam technology and see a romanticized period where anything was possible, which (when with some amazingly creative technology ideas) has given rise to Steam Punk.
So where do brass goggles come into this? For the most part the technology that is imagined for this genre is made from brass. Brass robots, brass weapons and, of course, brass goggles.
These brass goggles are of course used for safety, but they are also used for the 'look' of the period, allowing the characters (and for those into Steam Punk cosplay, the people dressing up) to have a stylish piece of eye wear that any Steam Punk fan could relate to.
Indeed, so synonymous is this relationship that the 'main' steam punk forum on the web is also known as Brass Goggles!

So what about brass goggles as an actual item? Are they something people can use in real life?
Very much yes. They are certainly a 'statement piece' - much like a statement necklace - in that they are able to get people talking and interested in what it is that you are wearing.
For the most part they are perfect for fancy dress. Obviously so if you are looking to create the 'steam punk' look that we were talking about, but they also have uses in other fancy dress outfits.
They are wonderful when it comes to creating a 'mad scientist' look as well, especially when coupled with a lab coat and the like. You can just imagine some nut job scientist who is creating all sorts of chemicals and concoctions using them.
They also suit a 'gentlemans' look - indeed they are sold on the web site that epitomizes all things gentle man - The Gentlemans Emporium.
Gentlemen at that time would wear goggles when riding bikes and the like - so they suit any sort of 'period' bike riding and the like. Might sound odd but I have a bunch of mates from my rugby club that go on a period bike ride across the UK every year, old bikes, tweed and the full works...don't know it till you've tried it!
