Sod Webworm Control

Sod webworm control is important to a pristine looking lawn. Sod webworm are problematic creatures that are able to stop your lawn from looking the best that it can. Because of their ability to damage the grass and make it look unsightly taking control of the problem is vital.

But it is not that easy. First you have to recognise that it is sod webworm in the first place (an issue many people face) and then you have to know what to do to remove them and stop them from coming back again.

What is Sod Webworm?

As we mentioned the first step of sod websorm control is recognising that you have sod webworm in the first place. Did you know that there are actually over 20 types of sod webworm in existence? Makes recognising them easier said than done.

Thankfully you don't need to recognise each type – simply knowing they are there and that it is them that are causing problems for your lawn is enough. Once you know that you can look at getting rid of them via methods that work for all types of the problematic creature.

Sod webworm are the larvae of the common 'lawn moth'. They live off of grass leaves and can grow to be almost an inch long before turning into a moth... and can munch through a garden in double quick speed.

The good news is that whilst they can be a major problem for your lawns they do only live off of grass.  This means that your flower beds and windowsill herb garden should be safe from theblighters!

Recognising Sod Webworm

The first sign that you will probably notice is that a patch of your lawn starts to turn brown (usually about the same size as a saucer). This is far from ideal but for many people is the first 'symptom' that they see. If there are browning areas of the lawn look at it at dusk... if there are numerous moths flying over the area the odds are good you have sod weborm.

It is important that you start a sod webworm control program as soon as you recognise they are there – otherwise the brown area of lawn will continue to expand, making an unsighly problem far worse.

Sod Webworm Control

The sod webworm live in the 'thatch' layer of grass just above the soil. The bigger and tighter the thatch the more attractive it is for them. So to try keep sod web worm at bay rather than have to deal with an infestation it is best that you keep your lawn as well raked as possible.

You find that despite your best efforts to prevent it you have suffered a sod webworm infestation on your lawn it is not the end of the world... but it is important that you control the webworm quickly as if left uncontrolled they can destroy a lawn in a matter of days.

Thankfully there are a number of excellent sod webworm control products available on the market. If the area is small then a spray can be the most effective way of getting rid of them. Simply rake the area, water it it then spray the product over the area. This should be enough to kill the small problem.

If you have a larger infestation then it is likely that you need granules. Wit these the same method is followed in that you rake and water the area – but you then shake the granules over the area and water it again to ensure that all the granules have soaked into the thatch layer.

As you can see not exactly difficult. Sod webworm can be a real problem for lawns but if you act quickly sod webworm control is not exactly a problem – getting rid of the creatures can take as little as a few minutes work.
